Mr.
Steller, formerly a Senior Partner in the Transportation Group
at Mercer Management Consulting (formerly Temple, Barker & Sloane)
and a founder of Maritime Management Consulting, is a specialist
in maritime operations and management. As a consultant in Mercer's
Maritime Practice for over sixteen years, Mr. Steller participated
in numerous studies covering all aspects of the international
maritime industry. He has specialized in the Shipbuilding and
Ship Repair Industry and the Cruise Industry, and he has analyzed
the liner industry, conducted port studies, assisted commercial
ship owners and operators in the operational aspects of their
companies, and conducted studies of the offshore oil exploration
and recovery industry.
In the maritime industry, Mr. Steller has assisted clients in
three major areas: process reengineering and organization transformation
to structure clients' entry into new markets, project development
and management, and operations improvement. He has led a team
of consultants and client managers in reengineering and reorganizing
the client company to achieve a new strategic plan. He has helped
clients assess ship construction opportunities, evaluate shipyard
bids, negotiate contracts for ship design and construction, and
manage the development of new projects. New project development
has included developing the conceptual ship design and bid packages
submitted to shipyards, asset valuations, and project management
of multi-million dollar contracts at shipyards. In the operations
area, he has evaluated revenue and cost performance of companies
and compared this performance with that of other businesses. He
has also performed management and operations audits of the onboard
performance of ships and assessments of the technical and organizational
effectiveness of the ships. For shipyards, Mr. Steller has developed
work-monitoring and cost-schedule control systems, designed and
planned management approaches, and reorganized and reengineered
shipbuilding organizations and processes.
Before joining Mercer, Mr. Steller sailed in the U.S. Merchant
Marine as both a Third Mate and a Third Assistant Engineer. Mr.
Steller worked at General Dynamics Electric Boat Division, where
he was responsible for the acceptance test program of two nuclear
submarine program prototypes, including the Trident submarine.
In this capacity he worked directly with government agencies and
defense contractors in submarine construction activities. He directly
supervised up to 100 shipyard employees. In addition, Mr. Steller
worked as a nuclear test engineer on other submarine programs,
specializing in steam and electric plants.
Mr. Steller received a B.S. (with highest honors) in marine engineering
and marine transportation from the United States Merchant Marine
Academy, an M.S. in naval architecture and marine engineering
from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and an M.B.A.
from the Harvard Graduate School of Business Administration. He
is a registered professional engineer and retired as a lieutenant
in the United States Naval Reserve.

process analysis for a major US airline
During his
time at Mercer Management Consulting (formerly Temple, Barker

needed by the maritime community, he spent considerable time with
a variety of shipyards and design agencies around the world, understanding
their product development and production processes and then translating
those needs into CAD, CAM and database products. Once those products
were built and delivered, Mr. Brewton often worked with these
firms to ensure that appropriate process and organization changes
were put in place to allow the tools to be effective.
A member of
the LOOP management training program at Bethlehem Steel’s Sparrows
Point Shipyard, Mr. Brewton learned both the engineering and production
sides of the shipbuilding business. Starting out in the Central

serving as Project Superintendent and Department Head for tanker,
container vessel and drill rig projects, usually with budget and
